How to Pronounce "Manor"

The town of Manor, Texas is pronounced "main-er", not "mann-er". It was named after the town's original Postmaster, James Manor, in 1872.

If you are using a screen reader, such as IBM's Home Page Reader product, you can configure it to pronounce the town of Manor correctly by mapping "M a n o r" to "M a y n o r" for American English.

For Home Page Reader, follow these steps to add this mapping:

  1. Go to Settings, Speech... from the main menu.
  2. Click on the "Dictionary" button. You should see the "Select Dictionary" dialog.
  3. Select the American English dictionary and press the "OK" button. You should get the "Dictionaries" dialog.
  4. Click on the "Add" button. You should get the "Dictionary Entry" dialog.
  5. In the "Key" field, enter the string "M a n o r".
  6. In the "Translation" field, enter the string "M a y n o r".
  7. Press the "SPR From Translation" button.
  8. Press "OK" or "Close" on all the open dialogs to save the changes.
